6 day Ayurveda and Yoga for Birth Educator
How will the course be structured?
This is a 60 hour course delivered over 6 days and due to be accredited by the Federation of Holistic Therapists (FHT). It consists of three 2 day blocks. You will cover: benefits of Ayurveda during pregnancy and birth; physical and emotional changes during pregnancy; practical yoga-based exercises and relaxation; key breathing exercises; stages of labor; safety and contraindications; effective teaching techniques and how to facilitate a class. Teaching takes place in small friendly groups. You will learn by experiencing yoga for pregnancy classes, taking part in group discussions, planning and delivering a session, peer teaching and directed study. As part of the course syllabus you will receive the published textbooks "Breathe your Way through Birth with Yoga" and "Yoga for Mother and Baby" by author Julie Llewellyn-Thomas..

You will learn that the practice of yoga in pregnancy and birthing can:

  • Provide relaxation and stress relief
  • Improve body posture and tone
  • Allow a more natural and active birth in an upright position
  • Reduce lower back pain
  • Improve production of the hormone oxytocin, which is essential for effective birth contractions and breast feeding
  • Give pain relief, via the production of natural "feel good" factors called endorphins
  • Reinforce inner strength, thereby helping to ease adversity and also empower women to birth in their own preferred way
  • Enhance bonding between women and their babies
  • Increase the involvement of the birth partner, especially via shared yoga practices and relaxation
  • Support more rapid recovery to pre-pregnancy fitness

  • By the end of the course you will be able to safely teach breathing and yoga based exercises to pregnant women from 14 to 40 weeks. You will be confident about the basic physiology of pregnancy and birthing. You will be able to plan and deliver classes which are specific to women's emotional and physical needs. You will also recognize pregnancy and birth as a spiritual experience which can be enhanced by the Ayurvedic practice of yoga.
